The judgment / Beverly Lewis.

Summary:

Rose Kauffman is engaged to Silas Good, a well-liked Amish fellow, so why does she still pine for Nick Franco, the former foster son of the bishop? Especially now that Nick has left the Amish community under a cloud of suspicion after the death of the bishop's biological son. Meanwhile, Rose's older sister, Hen, has returned to live at her parents' farm with her young daughter. Hen and her modern husband, Brandon, are separated by mutual agreement, although he is threatening to sue for custody of their daughter if Hen does not return soon. Will the judge rule in Brandon's favor? Is there any way Hen can reestablish her place among the People without sacrificing her marriage?

Self-absorbed and impulsive, Hen doesn't understand why her modern husband won't abandon his own life and flourishing business to join her in what he refers to as "Amishville," where she hopes to recapture the security of her childhood. Dutiful Rose, on the other hand, continues to support their bedridden mother and enjoy her limited courting time with Silas Good, although she is also mourning her best friend Nick's disappearance and considering the repercussions for the bishop's ministry. When Rose learns that Nick has been seen in a Philadelphia homeless shelter, and realizes that she and his foster mother were the only ones who ever appreciated him, she begins to question the unforgiving tenets and insular prejudices under which she was raised. Continuing the intriguing story arc established in The Thorn (2010), Lewis' Lancaster, Pennsylvania-area Amish Rose trilogy further develops Rose's struggles with her faith and the behavior expected of her, as she observes with startling clarity her sister's and the community's lack of Christian charity in their daily actions.
