Many of us turn to animals for companionship or reassurance, but Golliher's self-help philosophy is based on the inverse: he proposes that the act of befriending and comforting horses (specifically horses that have suffered abuse) can teach us essential lessons about communication, boundaries, fairness, trust, and respect. Writing in wise, grandfatherly, folksy style (one imagines cowboys around a camp fire), the horseman, ranch proprietor, and executive coach recounts his experiences training wild horses and traumatized horses at his Wyoming ranch and enumerates the lessons he's learned from the skittish animals. As the book's subtitle suggests, these lessons apply to interpersonal relationships as well as personal and career advancement; beyond that, Golliher paints a beautiful picture of the internal peace that good behavior and kindness can bring, describes the importance of boundaries in teacher-learner relationships, and brings to life an image of the individual strength that trusting relationships can confer.
