With lyrical Southern accents and charm, Eric Conger transports the listener to the Deep South as he dramatizes Sandford's latest suspense-filled thriller. In menacing tones Conger depicts the treachery and intrigue of this fast-paced drama as Investigator Lucas Davenport hunts down Clara Rinker, female assassin. Normally Rinker is paid to kill, but this time she's in pursuit of personal vengeance. Conger portrays gender changes with skill and does exceptional regional accents. Graphic torture and foul language interspersed throughout make this an undesirable listen for the squeamish, and the tense story screeches to a halt with an ending that falls flat. G.D.W. A Lucas Davenport audio thriller just wouldn't seem right without Richard Ferrone's reading. After nine narrations, you expect a certain quality and particular style from Ferrone, and you get it. In this, the tenth of Sandford's Prey series, Davenport, attached temporarily to the FBI, leads a search for a master hit man, er, hit woman, who almost killed Davenport and escaped in an earlier saga. There's more action in this latest, and Ferrone is up to it. His voice seems to purr when Sandford ratchets up the pace as Davenport closes in on his quarry. The finale is rather abrupt and a little disappointing, but have no fear, there's bound to be an eleventh Prey thriller with Ferrone at the helm. A.L.H. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine

In Mortal Prey, Lucas Davenport is back again, dealing with building his dream house, planning a wedding with the expectant Dr. Weather Karkinnen, and leaving the city police force for a job with the state police. Then bodies start to stack up, and he's drafted by the FBI and the DEA to track down and stop revenge-obsessed hit woman Clara Rinker. The juxtaposition of the great cop with the great criminal creates a startling tale that is filled with rich characterization and exceptional drama. Richard Ferrone continues his excellent tradition of narrating Sandford's "Prey" series, bringing just the right clarity and action to enhance the listener's experience. Highly recommended. Denise A.
