A pair of problems needs the attention of Arizona sleuth Ali Reynolds. First, Ali's daughter-in-law, Athena, asks for help for her widowed grandmother in Minnesota, whose charges of being the victim of attempted bodily harm are discounted because of her age and possible mental deterioration. Then Ali's dear friend, Sister Anselm, involves her in something bigger. A young pregnant girlâtrying to escape from a repressive polygamous cult called the Familyâis injured in a car accident, and the nun is called to be the patient advocate for both mother and infant. Ali follows the money in both cases, although getting information about the Family is like turning over a rock and finding something ugly. Breaking up the moneymaking scheme at the center of the Family eventually involves Interpol and law-enforcement agencies on all levels, and ends with a bloodbath that leaves Ali and Sister Anselm with feelings of responsibility. Jance's tenth Ali Reynolds entry (after Moving Target, 2014) is more sobering than many, but with the well-drawn characters, brisk prose, and skillful plotting that mark this dependable series. Ali Reynolds and her friend Sister Anselm are back, this time to rescue an elderly widow and a runaway teen.When Ali's daughter-in-law, Athena, asks for help with her grandmother Betsy Peterson, Ali's willing, even though she lives in Sedona, Arizona, and Betsy in Bemidji, Minnesota. Betsy's on her own in the farmhouse she and her late husband bought, and she's convinced that someone tried to murder her by leaving the gas burners on. The local police think she's a batty old dame, and only Athena and Ali take her part. While Ali's husband's security company is setting up a surveillance system for Betsy, Ali's friend Sister Anselm Becker becomes a patient advocate for Enid Tower, a pregnant teen hit by a car as she ran away from a polygamist commune near the isolated region around Colorado City. For political reasons, the state lets the commune of 25 or 30 householdsâcalling itself The Familyâgovern itself. As Sister Anselm learns, the women are forced to marry as y oung as 15, become broodmares, stay illiterate, live in servitude and shun the outside world. Once Enid's given birth and she's under Sister Anselm's protection, she and two other runaways fill in Ali and Anselm about The Family and the fate of those girls who try to escape. While Ali's trying to discover who's emptying Betsy's bank accounts back in Minnesota, she helps fend off Enid's husband, who wants his youngest wife and latest child back. A shocking discovery about how The Family affords the commune's upkeep brings Ali and Anselm even more help than they had hoped forâand leads them straight into more danger than they expected. The two unrelated plotlines give the impression that Jance (Moving Target, 2014, etc.) didn't have enough of either for a complete story. Yet Ali's good heart and sense of justice combine with well-paced suspense to create a satisfying whole greater than the sum of its parts. Two cases engage Ali Reynolds and her new husband, tech guru B. Simpson, in bestseller Jance's lively 10th novel featuring the former L.A. TV newscaster now living in her hometown of Sedona, Ariz. (after 2014's Moving Target). The first one involves Ali's daughter-in-law, Athena, whose grandmother is being pushed off her Minnesota farm. The second begins when pregnant teen Enid Tower escapes from a secretive polygamous cult and is badly injured after being hit by a car on an Arizona highway. As a result of the accident, she gives birth prematurely to a girl. Sister Anselm, nun extraordinaire and patient advocate, attends to Enid and her baby in the hospital. The investigation of the cult leads to horrendous violence, which doesn't quite pass the believability test. Anselm's scenesâlow-key but compellingâare the best thing in the book.
